The organisation

The Hague Marriott is situated on the outskirts of The Hague, a short distance from the city centre and the coast. The hotel has 306 rooms, 24 meeting rooms and several food and beverage outlets, and caters to a mixed clientele of business guests, conference attendees and international travellers. It employs approximately 65 staff. Annual turnover amounts to approximately €13.5 million, spread across five entities.

The hotel is part of YTL Hotels, an international hotel group headquartered in Malaysia with its own European finance organisation. This combination defines the nature of the role: local entrepreneurship within a group that sets clear guidelines and where lines of communication are short (provided you seek them out yourself).

Investments are being made. The renovation project for the bathrooms in 215 rooms is nearing completion, and preparations for a refurbishment of the meeting facilities and the restaurant are on the agenda. The Financial Controller is involved in the decision-making process from the outset, not just at the end of the process.

The role

Reason for the vacancy
The current Financial Controller is leaving the hotel at the end of October 2026 to take the next step in his career. This is therefore a succession within a financial role that is already well-established: it is not a recovery assignment nor a newly created position. The outgoing controller will be available for the handover, (by mutual agreement) even if this takes place after his departure.

The Financial Controller bears full financial responsibility for the hotel and is a member of the Hotel Management Team.

Position within the organisation

  • Hierarchical line: reporting directly to the General Manager, who also conducts the appraisal.
  • Functional line: reporting to the Director of Finance Europe at YTL Hotels, with the head office in Malaysia acting as the link.
  • Management: overseeing a finance team of three to four people, including the Financial Controller themselves, depending on whether a trainee is assigned. The team reports directly to the controller.
  • Mandate: budgets are drawn up and finalised within the hotel itself; YTL then approves them.

Responsibilities

Reporting and management

  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reports for the hotel and for YTL, including notes and analysis.
  • Monitoring the P&L by department and by outlet, and identifying variances before they become apparent in the figures.
  • Preparing forecasts and the annual budget, in consultation with the General Manager and the department heads.
  • Acting as a financial sparring partner for the General Manager and the Hotel Management Team.

Management and control
  • Cash management, accounts receivable and accounts payable management, and monitoring the liquidity position.
  • Setting up and maintaining the administrative structure and internal controls, and ensuring compliance with these in day-to-day operations.
  • Risk management and management of the insurance portfolio.
  • Maintaining the general ledger and preparing tax returns and reports for Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Chamber of Commerce.
Projects and investments
  • Financial administration and monitoring of ongoing CAPEX projects: currently the completion of the bathroom refurbishment in 215 rooms.
  • Substantiating investment proposals for the planned refurbishment of the meeting facilities and the restaurant, and liaising with YTL on these matters.
  • Managing and developing the finance team.

The tasks for the first year

The profile

Background and experience

  • Education: a higher professional education (HBO) or university (WO) degree in Finance & Accounting or Business Economics.
  • Sector: a background in the hospitality industry is strongly preferred; hotel operations differ significantly from other sectors. Candidates from other sectors may be considered, provided they are familiar with a comparable operation.
  • Level: there are no strict requirements regarding years’ experience or job level. Both current controllers and those looking to move up the career ladder are eligible; professional expertise is the deciding factor.
  • Professional expertise: you have a thorough grasp of all aspects of finance, regardless of the software you have used to date. Familiarity with working in an accounting system is essential; experience with SunSystems Cloud is an advantage.
  • Systems and digitalisation: an affinity for systems and a good understanding of IT, the Microsoft environment and the application of AI carry significant weight in this role.
  • Language: Dutch is not a formal requirement, but is highly desirable; those who do not speak it must be willing to learn it quickly. English is a given, given the international nature of the business.

Personality and style
In this hotel, finance is not an office-based role behind closed doors. The job requires someone who thrives on interacting with people and who is happy to make a daily round of the ‘hotel’. The General Manager is looking for a sparring partner when it comes to financial decisions, and that dialogue must be open: the outcome should be determined by the better argument, not by seniority. At the same time, the Financial Controller keeps a close eye on the finances: he or she knows what is sensible from a tax and cash flow perspective and isn’t afraid to speak up even when it’s inconvenient.

Terms of employment

  • Salary: €5,200 to €5,600 gross per month, excluding holiday pay, depending on experience.
  • Bonus: a potential bonus of 20 per cent of the annual salary. This scheme is discretionary and is approved or rejected by the owner of YTL.
  • Other: pension scheme, travel allowance, meals whilst on duty and the option to work from home to a limited extent.
  • Duty management: the hotel has a large team of duty managers; the Financial Controller works one shift every two to three months and receives a day off in lieu.
  • Marriott: access to the Marriott Explore Rate, the training programmes offered by Marriott and YTL, and career progression opportunities within the group.

The procedure

  • Recruitment is being handled by Fornell Human Capital. The client is also searching within its own network; no other agency is involved.
  • The decision-making lies with YTL’s General Manager and Director of Finance Europe.
  • The client is able to act quickly; the turnaround time depends mainly on the availability of candidates.
  • The preferred start date is 1 November 2026, to allow for a handover from the outgoing controller. A later start date is negotiable; the handover may also take place at a later stage.
